FSC

Summary

The basic research of the Cluster of Excellence "The Fuel Science Center - Adaptive Conversion Systems for Renewable Energy and Carbon Sources" (FSC) creates the basis for the integrated conversion of renewable electricity with biomass-based raw materials and CO 2 to liquid energy carriers with high energy density ("Bio-hybrid Fuels"), which enable highly efficient and clean combustion. In the FSC, knowledge and scientific methods are developed to replace engine combustion of fossil fuels by adaptive production and propulsion systems based on renewable energy and alternative carbon sources under dynamic boundary conditions.
Current research on renewable fuels is focused on replacement fuels for current engine technology. The carbon source is either sustainably produced biomass or CO2 for e-fuels. In its convergent approach to bio-hybrid fuels, the FSC goes far beyond this and creates the scientific basis for an integrated design of production processes and engine technology. Adaptive technological solutions are sought to respond to the increasing diversification of energy and raw material supply and changes in the mobility sector. For the realization of flexible and economical value chains, the (electro-)catalytic production of energy carriers and chemicals is considered. For the reconversion of the chemically stored energy, emission-minimized, molecularly controlled combustion systems are being researched. Methodological concepts will be developed to move from an analytical description to robust predictions for the assessment of environmental impact, economic efficiency and societal relevance.
